It’s a challenge, I admit… too many great talents around fulfilling every possible gap and space demanding validation and certainty. It’s also true, that contemporary composers today can generate interest in a variety of ways, appealing to different audiences and musical tastes. Of course, this is the ideal situation existing only in the mind of the naive and innocent. We’re all know that there is a constant ferocious standoff among those hoping for the big break, which could and should happened only for a lucky few. And this is fine… this is natural and somehow ethical. Not every wannabe should have the luxury to enter this glorious arena fed by institutional snobbism. It must be a competition. But what are the rules of this competition? What makes contemporary music stand out and what makes it attractive and a decent challenger to the widely and socially protected ‘classical’ repertoire? Here are some key areas of interest for contemporary composers:
- Innovation and Experimentation: Pushing the boundaries of traditional music with innovative techniques and experimental compositions can intrigue those who appreciate avant-garde or cutting-edge music.
- Cross-Genre Fusion: Combining elements from different musical genres, such as classical with electronic, jazz with rock, or world music with pop, can attract a diverse and open-minded audience.
- Social or Political Commentary: Creating compositions that address contemporary social or political issues can resonate with audiences looking for music that carries a message or provokes thought.
- Soundtrack and Film Scoring: Composers who work in film and television can captivate an audience interested in the fusion of music and visual storytelling.
- Collaborations: Collaborating with other artists, whether from the world of music, dance, visual arts, or other fields, can generate interest and new creative possibilities.
- Digital and Virtual Performances: Leveraging technology for live streaming, virtual reality, or interactive performances can engage tech-savvy and online audiences.
- Environmental or Nature Themes: Compositions inspired by nature or environmental concerns can resonate with audiences interested in ecological themes.
- Cultural Exploration: Exploring and incorporating musical traditions from different cultures or regions can appeal to those seeking a global and multicultural musical experience.
- Educational Initiatives: Composers who engage in music education or outreach programs can create interest by sharing their knowledge and passion with others.
- Live Performances: Delivering captivating live performances with visual effects, unique staging, or interactive elements can draw audiences seeking a memorable concert experience.
Ultimately, the key is to be authentic and passionate about one’s own artistic vision while considering the interests and preferences of the target audience. The contemporary music landscape is diverse, offering numerous avenues for generating interest and connecting with listeners. I’d rather prefer contemporary being musical as well… there are members of the peer who willingly squeezing out musical thinking from the flux of assembled phonograms glorifying noise and liberated public onanism under the umbrella of the emerging new type of social narrative. Is this good or is this bad? Future will tell. Until then have fun listening and let yourself embraced by the colorful contemporary musical offer… at least this is real and so contemporarily cool.
