Hug me, don’t squeeze… be gentle

Squeezing out musicality from contemporary performances is often not a goal but rather a criticism or observation made by those who feel that some modern artistic or entertainment performances lack the depth, emotional connection, or artistic quality that they associate with traditional or more musically rich performances. In our syncretic times, when thoughts and intentions running together into the melting pot of the great intellectual backyard, hopelessly and destroyed, nothing but cognitive mess will left behind.

To reach a broad audience, some contemporary performances may simplify their musical elements, making them more accessible but potentially less intricate or emotionally resonant. That’s fine… Advances in technology have led to the use of auto-tune, electronic instruments, and other production techniques that can, at times, overshadow the raw, human musicality in performances. This is fine too… The preferences and values of audiences and performers may have shifted in contemporary culture. Some artists and audiences may prioritize other aspects of performance, such as visuals, choreography, or storytelling, over musicality. I’m fine with it, as well…

It is also true, that contemporary performances often span a wide range of genres and styles, and not all of them may emphasize traditional musical elements. Some contemporary genres, like experimental or avant-garde art, may intentionally challenge traditional notions of musicality. Probably there is a good reason and argumentation for that… It’s important to note that not all contemporary performers or artists aim to squeeze out musicality. Some may have specific reasons for their stylistic choices, and their work might be intended to convey different forms of expression or evoke emotions in non-traditional ways.

In the midst of the technological and social revolution when shifting paradigms of all sorts became a daily sport, an ongoing race for public validation can be observed. I can accept and understand that in the modern entertainment industry, there can be a strong emphasis on profit and mass appeal. This can lead to performances that prioritize marketability and spectacle over the depth and artistry associated with musicality.

It’s worth emphasizing that musicality and the appreciation of art are highly subjective. What one person may see as a lack of musicality in contemporary performances, another may view as an exciting evolution or exploration of artistic expression. Contemporary performances often reflect the evolving tastes and preferences of audiences and the innovative approaches of artists. Ultimately, the definition of musicality and what is considered artistically valuable can vary greatly from person to person. Will music survive technological evolution? If yes, how and in what forms? Is the search for new ways of expression is over already? As for me I’ll calmly wait for the future arriving on my doorstep… oh, wait for a second… someone is knocking on my door… gotta go.
