We all may agree that music is a subjective matter, and what resonates with one person may not resonate with another. As such, perceptions of contemporary music’s popularity can vary widely depending on individual tastes and preferences. I keep hearing on different occasions that noncommercial music is loosing popular support. The idea that contemporary music is universally rejecting its audience is not entirely accurate, as contemporary music encompasses a wide range of genres and styles, each with its own audience. However, there are several factors that may contribute to a perception of disconnect between certain musical manifestation and its audience. For instance it would be fair to also look into the quality of the performance of that particular contemporary music. Content may be great, but if delivery sucks the entire public experience is compromised and this goes the other way around as well, of course.
With the rise of digital streaming platforms and the internet, the music industry has become more fragmented than ever before. There’s a vast array of genres, sub genres, and niche communities, making it challenging for any single composer/artist to reach a mainstream market. Audience preferences evolve over time, and what may be popular or relevant today could differ significantly from what was popular in the past. As cultural and societal values shift, so do musical tastes, which can create a gap between certain contemporary music and traditional audience expectations. In some cases, contemporary music that receives heavy commercial promotion may prioritize marketability over artistic innovation, leading to a perception of formulaic or generic music that lacks depth or authenticity. This can alienate audiences seeking more original or unconventional sounds. All together there is a constant rope dancing going on trying to keep up a fragile balance between ambitions, dreams and reality.
Contemporary composers/musicians ongoing mission is to push boundaries and experiment with new sounds, styles, and themes. While this can lead to groundbreaking and innovative music, it may also challenge traditional audience expectations and require listeners to be more open-minded and receptive to unfamiliar sounds. On the other hand contemporary music often reflects and responds to social and cultural issues, which can be divisive or controversial. Artists who address sensitive topics or challenge established norms may face resistance or rejection from certain segments of the audience, and this is all right… as it was from the beginning of times.
It’s important to recognize that while some contemporary music may not resonate with certain audiences, there are always new artists and genres emerging that cater to diverse tastes and preferences. Ultimately, the relationship between contemporary music and its audience is dynamic and multifaceted, influenced by a variety of factors including technological advancements, cultural shifts, and individual artistic expression.
Exactly this is the kind of existential dilemma which seeks answers by provoking the bounder pusher dreamers into their everlasting delusional trip toward the abyss of self assumption. This is why we will stay until the Sun keep shining upon us…
